Himanta Biswa Sarma is apolitician serving as the 15th and current Chief Minister of Assam. He was appointed as the Chief Minister on 10 May 2021 after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the 2021 State Assembly elections.
He is also serving as an MLA from Jalukbari constituency in Assam from 2001 till 2015 from Indian National Congress and from May 2016 as a Bharatiya Janata Party member. A former member of the Indian National Congress, Sarma joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 23 August 2015.

Himanta Biswa Sarma was awarded doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree by Gauhati University.
Himanta Biswa Sarma has remained as a General Secretary of Cotton College Union Society (CCUS) from 1991 to 1992.
During his school days, he was actively involved in historic Assam Agitation (1979-85).
He was been elected as the newly constituted North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) by the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership.
He was also been elected as the President of Assam Cricket Association and President of Badminton Association of India in the years 2016 and 2017 respectively.
He has executed several missions and health plans like the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), MAMATA, and many more for the welfare of rural areas and women of the country.
Under his leadership, about more than 50,000 teachers got appointed through the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) for the first time.
Besides, Assam Public Health Bill 2010 was introduced only under his leadership, which made Assam be the first state in the country to do so.
Besides that, he is president of theBadminton Association of India.
Dr Sarma also acted as a child artist in the blockbuster Assamese movie of the early 80s — Kokadeuta, Nati Aru Hati.
He also several books to his credit. He has penned three books in Assamese – Samagata Samay, Bhinna Samay Abhinna Mat, and Eta Saponar Pam Khedi.
He recently translated the biography of union home minister Amit Shah from English to Assamese.
